This is where research into improvement processes in the logistics supply chain takes place. \"Education, government and entrepreneurs are looking for sustainable, digital solutions together,\" said UM professor\u00a0<a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/bart-vos-6004961\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bart Vos<\/a>\u00a0(scientific director BISCI).\u00a0<span class=\"afbreken-einde-zin\" lang=\"\">Retrieved from\u00a0<\/span>On Tuesday 18 April, the professor will speak at the 'Know Your Neighbour' meeting about the importance of BISCI for businesses in North Limburg.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"_idContainer200\" class=\"Basistekstkader\">\n<p class=\"Platte-tekst\" lang=\"nl-NL\">The Brightlands Institute for Supply Chain Innovation (BISCI) is a science-based but practice-oriented knowledge institute that develops innovative solutions for logistics and supply chain management in the region in collaboration with companies and knowledge institutions.\u00a0<span class=\"afbreken-einde-zin\" lang=\"\">At\u00a0<\/span>2019 started with five people, now some 40 professionals from UM, TNO (Netherlands Organisation for Applied Natural Science Research) and Fontys Venlo are part of the permanent BISCI team. In addition, dozens more students carry out research projects every year.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p lang=\"nl-NL\"><span class=\"CharOverride-53\" lang=\"\">'As a knowledge institution, we have\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"CharOverride-53\" lang=\"\">we play a bridging role between different agencies'<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"Platte-tekst\" lang=\"nl-NL\">Bart Vos learned the intricacies of the supply chain profession during his 20-year career as NEVI Professor of Purchasing and Supply Chain Management at Tilburg University. Since 2019, he has been ultimately responsible for the master's programme Global Supply Chain Management and Change at Maastricht University as well as deploying his expertise in logistics and supply chain management at BISCI.\u00a0<span class=\"afbreken-einde-zin\" lang=\"\">\"The\u00a0<\/span>supply chain is the link of transport options behind an order,\" Vos explains.\u00a0<span class=\"afbreken-einde-zin\" lang=\"\">\"It\u00a0<\/span>BISCI's main goal is to improve and make the supply chain in the region more sustainable through digital solutions. In doing so, we have a bridging function as a knowledge institution where we do not build physical, but proverbial bridges between education, government and entrepreneurs.\"<\/p>\n<p class=\"Tussenkopje\" lang=\"nl-NL\"><strong>Education meets entrepreneurs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Platte-tekst\" lang=\"nl-NL\">Entrepreneurs can contact BISCI for a small request for help to a large project. Although BISCI's office is located at the Greenport Campus, BISCI's researchers and students mainly conduct their research at companies in the region.\u00a0<span class=\"afbreken-einde-zin\" lang=\"\">\"It\u00a0<\/span>business community is our laboratory,\" says Vos. From UM and Fontys, students are looking for companies in northern Limburg where they can do their graduation thesis.\u00a0<span class=\"afbreken-einde-zin\" lang=\"\">\"The\u00a0<\/span>two main themes the students are working on are sustainability and digitalisation. Our students can help entrepreneurs by providing recommendations or specific implementation support.\" According to Vos, this collaboration is a \"win-win-win situation\" for BISCI, the students and the entrepreneurs alike.\u00a0<span class=\"afbreken-einde-zin\" lang=\"\">\"So\u00a0<\/span>students apply their knowledge in practice and the company can make use of young and bright talent. This gives the entrepreneur the prospect of a potential employee, who gets to know the company well and can start working here after graduation.\u00a0<span class=\"afbreken-einde-zin\" lang=\"\">A\u00a0<\/span>ideal situation for entrepreneurs, especially in view of the current staff shortage.\"<\/p>\n<p class=\"Tussenkopje\" lang=\"nl-NL\"><strong>Sustainability solutions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Platte-tekst\" lang=\"nl-NL\">BISCI focuses on making activities within the supply chain more sustainable by using digital tools, such as deploying drones for 'the last mile'. Vos: \"Packages arrive at a distribution centre in the Netherlands in containers from, for example, Asia by air, sea and\/or land. From here, all those individual parcels have to be taken to consumers' front doors.\u00a0<span class=\"afbreken-einde-zin\" lang=\"\">The\u00a0<\/span>is a challenge to carry out this 'last mile' sustainably as it requires many transport movements, going all over the country.\u00a0<span class=\"afbreken-einde-zin\" lang=\"\">The\u00a0<\/span>result is that trucks are often only half loaded.\" BISCI is therefore investigating whether drones can play a role in the 'last mile'.\u00a0<span class=\"afbreken-einde-zin\" lang=\"\">\"It\u00a0<\/span>research is still at an early stage and there are many snags in realising this plan outdoors due to current legislation. That is why we are also investigating whether drones can be used in other places in the logistics chain, for example as automated help in the pick-and-pack process in a warehouse.\"<\/p>\n<p class=\"Platte-tekst\" lang=\"nl-NL\">Another theme BISCI focuses on is waste, by making chains circular. Vos: \"People are increasingly thinking about solutions to achieve high-quality reuse of residual materials.\u00a0<span class=\"afbreken-einde-zin\" lang=\"\">At\u00a0<\/span>BISCI, we focus on reducing waste and want to prevent waste from ending up in waste heaps or being incinerated. This branch is still developing, but in the coming years we will support more and more companies, municipalities and provinces in the transition from linear to circular chains.\"<\/p>\n<p class=\"Tussenkopje\" lang=\"nl-NL\"><strong>Future<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Platte-tekst\" lang=\"nl-NL\">BISCI is currently financially supported by the Province of Limburg, this grant runs until the end of 2024.\u00a0<span class=\"afbreken-einde-zin\" lang=\"\">\"It\u00a0<\/span>our goal is to stand on our own feet after this period,\" Vos says. \"Therefore, we are looking for companies that want to explore innovative supply chain solutions with our help.
