Sustainability is high on the agenda both nationally and internationally, with the main goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, especially CO2<\/sub>. The European Green Deal sets a target of 55% reduction in CO2<\/sub>emissions by 2030, compared to 1990, and aims for a climate-neutral Europe from 2050. The logistics sector plays a crucial role in achieving these goals. <\/strong><\/p>\n Due mainly to freight vehicles still often running on diesel, the logistics sector is the third largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, according to Statistics Netherlands. From 2024-2025, large companies will be required under the CSRD legislation to report annually on their environmental impact. This will initially apply to listed companies and those with more than 250 employees.<\/p>\n Companies will have to report on scope 1, scope 2 and scope 3 CO2<\/sub>-emissions, including other greenhouse gases, converted to CO2<\/sub>-equivalents. What is CARBON class The CARBON lesson programme
\nScope 1<\/strong> concerns direct emissions from sources that an organisation owns or controls, such as buildings, transport and production.
\nScope 2<\/strong> includes indirect emissions from purchased energy generated outside the company but used inside the company.
\nScope 3<\/strong> also includes indirect emissions, but these are caused by the activities of other organisations, such as suppliers, outsourced (logistics) activities and employee commuting.<\/p>\n
\n<\/strong>The project CARBON lesson<\/em> from the Fieldlab Technological Innovation & Smart Logistics (TISL) helps SME entrepreneurs in the logistics sector to actively start measuring, reporting and reducing CO2<\/sub>e-emissions. Together with supply chain partners, the project offers support and practical tools for making processes and organisational structures within a company more sustainable.<\/p>\n
\n<\/strong>The programme consists of 4 strategic and 4 operational workshops. In the strategic workshops, external factors, including laws and regulations and current CO2<\/sub>e emissions mapped out and linked to the business targets. This results in a detailed overview of the total CO2<\/sub>e emissions picture of the company. During the operational sessions, we take a closer look at the CO2<\/sub>e emissions of the company. We make a thorough analysis of the CO2<\/sub>e emissions per process, while also identifying improvement opportunities. This provides insight into the process-specific CO2<\/sub>e emissions and possible optimisations. In addition, a learning network is formed with companies, students, researchers from Fontys and Maastricht University and external experts. Within this network, a number of meetings will be organised around the theme of CO2e emission reduction.<\/p>\n
