ASML, the benefits for Venlo

Column Bart Maes

With the continued growth of chip machine manufacturer ASML, the Brainport region increasingly prominent on the economic map. This growth brings benefits not only to Veldhoven and Eindhoven, but also to surrounding cities such as Venlo. As ASML expands its workforce and the region remains a magnet for talent, a unique opportunity arises for Venlo to benefit from this dynamism.

ASML's expansion plan foresees a doubling of the number of employees in the region, amounting to about 40,000 people commuting to work, looking for housing and building their lives here. This influx of highly educated workers and young families presents opportunities for cities like Venlo. As an attractive hometown with good amenities, Venlo can welcome some of these new residents.

A growing population means more demand for housing, services and retail. Young families will settle in Venlo, leading to increased demand for schools, childcare and recreational facilities. This offers local entrepreneurs an opportunity to benefit from the economic boost. The shopping centre benefits from new customers, which has a positive effect on the local economy.

Venlo also has a strong manufacturing base, with many suppliers already based in the region. ASML's growth will undoubtedly lead to increased demand for products and services from these suppliers. This means more jobs and economic growth within the city itself. Companies can take advantage of the proximity of a giant like ASML and the synergies created by cooperation in the chain.

Developments in the Brainport region offer Venlo a unique opportunity to position itself as a crucial player in this growing economic hub. By proactively investing in housing, infrastructure and local amenities, Venlo can prepare to provide a home for its new residents while strengthening the local economy.
