'Energy transition in SMEs' course

15 November 2024

The urgency to switch from fossil fuels to more sustainable energy sources is growing by the day. Hence, Fontys Venlo has developed the course 'Energy transition for SMEs.

The course is designed for SME entrepreneurs and decision-makers who are responsible for energy consumption within their companies. Besides the basics of sustainability, it focuses on dealing with grid congestion and planning sustainable expansion strategies. Participants learn to map their current energy consumption and gain insight into concrete measures to reduce it. Using a questionnaire and a quick scan, participants learn where the most gains can be made, such as more efficient use of heating installations.

Course leader Fons Claessen says: 'The need to move away from fossil fuels is greater than ever. Companies need to contribute to reducing energy consumption, resource efficiency and lower CO2 emissions. European climate obligations and changing legislation, such as the Energy Agreement, make it necessary for companies to act now.'

Trends and low-hanging fruit in the energy transition
Fons sees a shift from non-committal to stricter requirements from laws and regulations, but also from customers. Moreover, fluctuating energy prices play a role. 'Every kilowatt you don't use saves money,' says Fons. 'SMEs can already gain a lot by taking simple steps, such as optimising heating systems, using motion detectors for lighting and using white roofing, which can keep the indoor climate up to five degrees cooler.'

Being critical of energy transition consultants
A key benefit of participating in this course is that entrepreneurs themselves gain basic knowledge about the energy transition. 'This allows them to ask better questions of any advisers and make more targeted decisions,' says course leader Fons. This makes companies less dependent and strengthens their negotiating position.
Finally, he notes that younger generations, such as Gen Z, prefer companies that actively invest in sustainability. 'A sustainable course attracts young talent and gives companies a competitive advantage.'
