Venlo rail terminal construction begins

06 March 2020

VENLO - After a ride on historic rolling stock - for those in the know: the Mat '46, also known as the 'mouse nose'- minister was Cora van Nieuwenhuizen attended the festive completion of the rail access. She gave the official starting signal for the construction of the Railterminal Greenport Venlo. This will be the largest inland terminal for loading and unloading containers.

'The track is ready. Within time and within budget. Venlo will soon be able, when the Rail Terminal is also ready, to receive XXL trains; trains of 740 metres. One such train is equivalent to 54 trucks. On an annual basis, you are then talking about tens of thousands of trucks that do not have to go on the road. And thus a huge reduction in CO2 emissions,' said minister Van Nieuwenhuizen.

Deputé Joost van den Akker Venlo as Europoort of Rotterdam-East and Ruhr-West, as if it were die Zwei Brüder. For XXL trains of >700m, that saves 10,000s of trains a year! This largest inland rail terminal in Europe is essential for the sustainable development of the Venlo region as a logistics hotspot!'

Cost
The new and relocated track has cost 50 million euros. The state has paid half of that, the province 20 million and Venlo municipality 5 million. The rail terminal at Trade Port Noord is expected to be ready for operation in September. The rail terminal will then be able to load and unload 12 trains per day.

Cabooter
Venlo-based Cabooter Group will manage the terminal and invest over 20 million in it. The logistics company expects to be able to send goods by rail all over Europe from here in the future. And even further. The rail terminal is fully electrically accessible.
