Cabinet scraps central final exams in secondary education

24 March 2020

Central examinations will not go ahead this school year. Minister Slob (education) has decided this together with educational organisations. This decision gives schools more time to complete school exams. The results of the school exams form the basis for graduation this school year.

Minister Slob: "We are currently asking a lot from teachers and students want good preparation for their exams. With this far-reaching decision, there is clarity. I want to give all pupils the chance to obtain a full diploma and thus to move on to further education without delay in these times of crisis."

School exams
The central exam will be dropped this school year. Students can earn the diploma based on the results of their school exams. Schools will be given longer to organise and conclude school exams properly and safely. Schools are urged, in line with the new measures, to do school exams remotely as much as possible. Where necessary, schools have scope to adjust their Programme of Examination and Completion (PTA) to achieve this. In consultation with the further education sector, we are looking at how students entering this year can be best prepared for their further education within the current circumstances.

Information on the new fail-success scheme and resits will follow as soon as possible.
