PostNL opens new sorting centre in Venlo

22 October 2018
PostNL inaugurates its twenty-first parcel sorting centre in the Netherlands. This 7,700 m2 building in Venlo processes between 80,000 and 120,000 parcels every day. The building has the highest BREAAM Outstanding certification, which indicates that it is a sustainable building with minimal environmental impact. Consequently, it no longer uses gas, investments have been made in sustainable materials and installations (including heat recovery systems and LED lighting) and solar panels are being installed.

More parcels are sent every year in the Netherlands. Last year, for instance, PostNL delivered 675,000 parcels daily. That was 207 million in total: 17.2 per cent more than in 2016. This parcel sorting and distribution centre in Venlo contributes to national coverage to deliver parcels seven days a week everywhere in the Netherlands.

Liesbeth Kaashoek, Director Parcels & Logistics at PostNL: 'With the opening of this parcel sorting centre in Venlo, we are responding to the growth of e-commerce and investing in our parcels and logistics infrastructure. Because of its location, this depot is very well placed to facilitate not only Dutch - but also German customers with parcel sorting and distribution.

Alderman Boom of Economic Affairs of the Municipality of Venlo: "The new PostNL site plays strongly into our euregional logistical strength and at the same time offers a number of people from a benefit situation a new job. In addition, the stated sustainability and energy recovery fits within our circular ambition. This makes the PostNL branch a more than welcome addition to the business activity at Greenport Venlo."

Sorting and delivery of parcels in the region

The parcels sorted here in the evening and night mainly come from customers in the Venlo region. These go to households throughout the Netherlands and Belgium. In the morning, parcels from customers throughout the Benelux are processed. They are sorted at other PostNL locations and are delivered to households in the Venlo area from this parcel sorting centre.
